The Amazing Race 15: Week 1

And so it has begun! Extenuating circumstances prevented Robert and I from watching the entirety of last night's episode - we actually only saw about the first 30 or 40 minutes - but that was still enough time for me to cultivate some snap judgments on the teams. My witty repartee can be found italicized after certain teams' recaps. :o)

Off we go with the first of many EW.com Race recaps!

-----

Was this season 15 of The Amazing Race or season 3 of I Survived a Japanese Game Show? Thankfully, it was the former, even if there was a large chunk in which it seemed like the latter. So let's begin with my new rallying cry, ''Eat the wasabiiiiiiiiii!''

ERIC AND LISA Let's get them out of the way quickly, with the same speed from which they vanished from the show. Borrowing a trick used in Survivor, the Race decided to dump a team right away, after a challenge right at the starting line. The contest involved looking at a wall of license plates, trying to find a plate from the Tokyo district that they'd all be jetting off to; as it kicked off, I tried to guess which team I'd be happiest losing this early in the game, and, fortunately, Eric and Lisa were right up there in my mind. They were yoga teachers, but, as Eric said, they weren't your ordinary teachers: ''We're like yoga in the hood.'' I have a feeling if Eric and Lisa ever tried to teach their yoga in the hood, they would last about as long as they did in this game. And for all their talk about being ''extreme'' yogaists (yogists? yogers? yogifiers?), they accepted their loss in a very zen manner. ''To be the first team eliminated, now the shame, the pain is gone for everybody else. We took a beating for everybody.'' Added Lisa: ''We set them free.'' So in yoga terms, they stepped in downward-facing dog mess so others could stride on with clean shoes. (The fact that this team was the first to go made me smile last night because they were Robert's pick to be... one of the better teams. I would have said "to win" but when I laughed and pointed and made fun of Robert's truly crapola taste in Racers, he informed me in no uncertain terms that he hadn't pegged the yogameisters to win... just to do well. Whatever. He was still wrong and that makes me happy. A little bit, okay! I know - I'm a sad, shriveled little woman inside.)

SAM AND DAN The Amazing Race casting agents usually prefer their gay players to play to the broadest stereotypes of flamboyance, bitchiness, or haplessness. Which is why this team is going to throw homophobic viewers into turmoil, and possibly a deep spiral of tough self-questioning: Wait, these guys look and act like my frat brothers! And they celebrated their mutual coming out with high-fives! But...I high five, too. In fact, I just did, when the Eagles won. Does that mean I'm gay? Or are the Eagles gay? The brothers are hiding their sexuality from the other teams, hoping to get on the good sides of female teams that want to flirt with them and don't realize how pointless it is. Damn their sister for nearly blowing their cover by giving them matching orange passport covers! (My only thought on these guys? That they think veeeerry highly of themselves if they just assume female contestants will want to flirt with them. I wouldn't!)

MARIA AND TIFFANY What is it with reality shows casting poker players? First there was Jean-Robert on Survivor, then Natalie on Big Brother, and now these professional card sharps. Is it because poker provides the most obvious metaphor for why someone will be good at this game? We get it, you're used to reading people and bluffing and getting free drinks and wearing green visors! Now shut up and play! Frankly, the Race, with its minor reliance of alliances or cooperation, is the least applicable of reality shows to poker skills. The only thing that can hold you in good stead is the ability to stay up all night playing a game. These women decided to use their bluffing skills by telling everyone that they worked for a homeless organization, so their competitors wouldn’t know they were rich (cover broken when a chip groupie recognized them in an airport), and would think they were far nicer than they were (cover broken when they were big snobs). And all their vaunted poker skills weren't on display in Tokyo: During the wasabi game-show challenge, Maria had the opposite of a poker face when she failed to eat her first wasabi roll in time and had to do it again, nearly crying and quitting. And then, once she finished and she and Tiffany were given 20 audience members to shepherd through Tokyo, they lost two. Aren't counting skills kind of key in poker? When she finishes a round of five-card draw, does she ever have to tell the dealer, ''Bad news: I seem to only be able to find three cards. I swear to God, there's an Ace of hearts around here somewhere, you'll just have to take my word for it.'' Oh, and also, what does it say for their powers of perception when they're shamelessly flirting with two gay men? When are they gonna learn to fold on that one?

Quick interjection here on the Tokyo game show challenge: I enjoyed the ludicrous frenzy at first, but ultimately it failed as a challenge since it was entirely luck based. How fast you got through depended partly on how fast you could down the incredibly spicy roll, but far more important was whether the wheel determining who got the spicy roll would land on you in the first place. Sure, there are other challenges that are based on luck (any needle in a haystack game, for instance), but at least there you get the feeling that the player has some minor say in it, even if it's random. Here, it was just a 50/50 chance, every time. Plus — and I'm sorry if I seem sadistic — nobody seemed as visually tortured by the task as I'd hoped. Once you've seen Steve-O snort wasabi on Jackass and practically bleed from the eyes, anything else seems anticlimactic.

LANCE AND KERI Let's meet this year's Massholes, shall we? It's Lance, the full-contact ''street'' lawyer whose wife, Keri, verifies that he is ''smaaaaaaaaaaht.'' Tiffany struggled to find the right word to describe Lance: ''I don't want to use the word 'meathead' in the wrong sense, but we can not picture Lance in a courtroom.'' Not to worry, Tiffany, your word choice is spot-on! (We also would have accepted ''loudmouth'' or ''boob.'') Lance is aggressive and bossy, and really self-confident. When he landed on both mats, he yelled, ''That's right!'' to Phil, as if his very presence at the finish line was akin to him winning an Olympic medal. Lance is also not one for introspection. He's on the Race to win, he said, not to find himself, ''Because hey,'' he said, flexing his muscle, ''I'm right here.'' Oh, sure, it's easy to find yourself when you label yourself with a bandana tied around your bicep in the same way that you mark your suitcase so you can find it in the baggage carousel. I'd hate to see how Lance marks his ass so he can find the difference between it and a hole in the ground.

GARY AND MATT Why, if it isn't the ''father and son who never communicated much before but whose relationship will grow in leaps and bounds on the trip'' team! The Montana family didn't show much disharmony or awkwardness around each other, a la Ron ''Real truth flavor!'' and his daughter Christina. Too bad it was 2009; if this were 30 years ago, everything would have been in place for generation gap bickering: In 1979, Vietnam would have been the perfect locale for a farmer dad and a hippie son to fight. Plus, Matt's pink hair was readymade for a ''You pinko!'' insult. Unfortunately, it's 2009, and Gary is not Archie Bunker.

MEGHAN AND CHEYNE First of all, Cheyne is pronounced ''Shane.'' Which makes me wonder, ''Why doesn't he spell it ''Shane''? I can concentrate on little else with this team of childhood sweethearts. I tried to make a joke about how his hair looks like that of the Slim Jim mascot, but no, I kept getting distracted and coming back to his name. Should I be spelling my name, ''Gawche''? Okay, other than that, they're young and athletic and perpetually and perky and SERIOUSLY, ''CHEYNE''? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? (If ever there was a time Josh the Recapper and Robert were on the same wavelength, this is it. While I earlier tried to get past the name and like this couple for their love of tetherball, Robert cannot seem to get past "Chain's" name. After seeing them in the flesh (as it were) I have to say I'm not really feelin' Megs and Che all that much. Too Barbie and Ken. Plus, is Chain 12 years old or what?! Yowza.)

MIKA AND CANAAN They're newly dating, religious, and he's a songwriter who's saving himself for marriage. ''He likes me for the right reasons,'' said Mika. ''It's not because he wants to have sex. He's kind of like a diamond in the rough.'' A diamond in the rough? Doesn't this all make him more like a diamond behind three panels of bulletproof glass? But Canaan is a saintly character, happiest when he's plucking his acoustic guitar and writing soulful tunes about Mika's sacred lady parts and how much fun it is to hold hands while wearing three pairs of gloves and how nothing is more important than treating a woman with respect and...and...what's that? Mika's failing at the challenge where she had to shepherd ducks in Vietnam? ''God, I want to rip her head off right now!'' Canaan bellowed. Sorry, where was he? Oh yes, respect and love.... (I'm much more offended by Canaan than Cheyne. Canaan? WTF? This just points out my innate shallowness - upon further investigation I see it's a religious name with origins in Hebrew. Mi mal. Even if I didn't have a superficial dislike of his moniker, I would hate this team merely because their cheesy singing clips irritate the crap out of me. Horrible! Terrible! And did I mention cheesy? Ick.)

MARCY AND RON The requisite older team on the Race, he's a worrier, she's peppy. They seem like a fun couple, as long as Marcy tones down her cruise director aspirations. When they led their team of audience members through the streets of Tokyo, she acted like she was squiring a team of Girl Scouts, attempting to get them to sing and dance. And she continued to do this as she led them a couple of miles in the wrong direction. Personally, when I've been dragged miles out of my way through the Tokyo heat, I prefer to do so in silence: by mile three, the hokey-pokey is not welcome.

FLIGHT TIME AND BIG EASY Okay, if this was a popularity contest, everyone would have given up before getting on the first flight, because who can beat a pair of Harlem Globetrotters? And yet, unlike their basketball matches, this game is not fixed. There are no Washington Generals to play the fool. How will these two react in a world where people don't stand still to have their shorts pulled down and be doused with buckets of water? F.T. and B.E. seem to be doing fine so far, and they're lovable in the grand tradition of Meadowlark Lemon and Curly, and yet I'll be curious to see if they will keep their professional and competitive cool when things get tough. It may scar a nation of children to see a Globetrotter fail miserably, let alone scream, ''This is bulls---!'' after it happens.

ZEV AND JUSTIN Zev has Asperger's, which is on the autism scale, and at first I thought this was entirely the root of his flat, whiny, Rain-Man-like delivery. But then as the episode went on, and he grimaced at the thought of walking in Vietnam's flooded streets, and dropped dryly witty remarks that made his pal Justin roar, I realized, wait, he also sounds like many of my neurotic, funny, deadpan acquaintances who work in the media. So what does this mean: that Asperger's is only incidental to Zev's demeanor, or that 70% of all New York media types have Asperger's? That's a question for science, I suppose.

BRIAN AND ERICKA Wow, we've had ''beauty queens'' on the show before, but never the top of the beauty queen food chain, a former Miss America! And I think she'll do well, provided Sam and Dan don’t ask her about gay marriage: that hasn't gone well for beauty contestants as of late. She does exude beauty-queen cool; in tense situations, you could often see her about to snap, but then a sharp voice in her head shouted, ''Remember the judges!'' and she'd slap on a smile and lay out a quip like, ''I think we should stick to American game shows!'' Ha ha ha YOU'RE GOING DOWN, MISS GEORGIA! As for Brian, there's a guy who knows how to make things happen. When the ticket agent in Tokyo told him the flight to Vietnam was sold out, I thought he was nuts for asking them to sell him an economy ticket but put him in business. What next, offering to trade them a ten for two twenties? And yet it worked! And later, when their bus was set to depart over an hour after the first teams' bus, he arranged for all the trailing teams to chip in to bribe the bus driver to leave earlier. And that worked! The man can talk himself into any situation…which makes me wonder if Ericka will one day wake up, look at her wedding ring and then him, and say, ''Now hold on a minute, how did this happen?''

GARRETT AND JESSICA Finally, the requisite, ''On again/Off Again, Should We Break Up Or Get Married'' couple. Normally, I love bickering twosomes on the Race, and yet I'm not sad to see these go as they didn't appear to have the raw, sharp-tongued combustibility of such hall of famers as Nate and Jen. Through the whole episode, Jessica was portrayed as the problem half, what with her ''short fuse.'' Garrett seemed pretty stonefaced, mumbling about how she needed to calm down. And yet at the end, when they arrived last at the Vietnam pit stop and were eliminated, he pounded a wall in frustration and Phil quickly turned to Jessica and said, ''Does he get angry like this?'' Haven't you been listening, Phil? She's the one with the short fuse! Phil's like a cop who walks into a bar, sees someone kicking someone else in the face, and looks at the victim and says, ''Sir, you're under arrest for hitting that guy's shoe with your head!'' Since Garrett and Jessica had only been on the road for one leg, we couldn't hope for any great epiphanies in their relationship…and we got none. ''I don't know if we're closer to marriage. You never know,'' he said. Jessica, is he always this noncommittal? You can tell us.

So which team are you rooting for? Do you think we're in for a good season? Do you think the Globetrotters have an unfair advantage, what with them being internationally beloved and able to turn water into confetti? Let me know, and I'll see you again next week!

Barry!

Garfunkel had a rough weekend. First, a dog picked a fight with him at the dog park on Saturday morning. The Funk came home quite muddy... though I could only get a shot of his head:

The dog in question had already gotten into a fight with another dog during the time Robert and Garfunkel were at the park before he set his sights on The Funk. Bully!

Then, it was 83 degrees in the condo at the height of the day and Garfunkel took to the bathroom floor to find some cool linoleum:

And THEN the worst - Garfunkel devoured poor Barry the Bear's head! Oh. I think Robert thought I was a huge wackaloon because I was quite distraught over Barry's demise. What can I say? I get overly attached to inanimate objects. Sue me! (I would be just as distressed even if I didn't name all of Garfunkel's toys, I assure you.) Ol' Barry has been with us since the beginning and I had foolishly convinced myself that he might make it for the long haul. It was not to be. :o(

Here's Robert with Barry's nose in his left hand and the stuffing from Barry's head in his right:

Here's Garfunkel showing no remorse whatsoever and playing with Barry's nearly decapitated body:

(Oh, and the brown thready-y looking thing under Garfunkel's arms? A piece of Miles.)

Finally, here's Barry's empty, faceless noggin. It's just so sad! Oh.

R.I.P. Barry. You were our favorite toy. Thanks for toughing it out these past 6 months. You will be sorely missed.

MySpace vs. Facebook

I came across these Blunt Cards via Obsolete (who got them from livelikeyouweredying) and they made me giggle. You younger more tech-savvy folk will appreciate the humor… ;o)

Biji's Famous!

The September 5th Cal football game had a strong military presence/theme throughout and until Biji sent me the following video, I didn't entirely understand why. But, according to the YouTube description from Cal Athletics: "As part of Spirit of America Day, during the halftime of the Cal vs Maryland Football game on September 5th, the young men and women from the Bay Area took their oath of enlistment prior to departing for basic training with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. Captain Tony Laird, United States Navy, department head for the Cal Berkeley Military Affairs Department, representing Cal ROTC, gave the oath." Being a Big Kahuna of the Cal ROTC, Biji, of course, was very involved in all of the goings-on that day. Which is good, as it turns out, because he made it into the video! Check it out! [Oh, and my coworker thinks you're good looking in a hat, Biji, so, y'know, yay for you. ;o) ]

Man... Biji looks huge! HUGE!!!Very intimidating. And I always enjoy Biji's Army face. :o) Actually, I enjoy Biji's whole demeanor once he snaps into Army mode - it's a trip! He's so goofy and dorky as regular Biji; it's kind of fun to see him snap into his Don't-Mess-With-Me-I-Could-Seriously-Kick-Your-Ass persona. Plus, you can just see people's respect for him... and it's always fun to hear people call him 'sir.' ;o)

On a sort of similar note, my dad, being a Cal alum and military veteran, attended the game, too. I'm glad he went - if you know my dad, you know he's a big Cal guy and I think he really enjoyed the chance to check out campus and whatnot. Plus, he's a huge band nerd and enjoyed getting to see what has and hasn't changed with the ol' marching band. One thing he expected but didn't get was the traditional bomb going off on the 20-yard line before the band emerged onto the field. Luckily, however, the Cal Band Alumni group sent out some You Tube links for several things that happened at the game the following week, and the band bomb was included. Vindication! My dad, knowing I'd appreciate his story (I did - you know how much I love it when my random knowledge is proved correct!) forwarded one of the aforementioned clips to me. Why am I boring you with this? Because at the 43 second mark you can see a guy in a gold shirt and dark pants get completely bowled over by the bass drum player as he runs out of the tunnel*. My dad pointed it out to me and I'm glad he did; I'm not sure I'd have caught it on my own and it was by FAR the best part of the video!!! Sent me into a cackling fit at my desk.

(FYI: You can hear the bomb go off at the 48 second mark, followed by residual smoke at the 52 second mark.)

*According to comments posted on YouTube since I last watched the video, the unfortunate fellow is supposedly a security guard that was previously told he was in the way and was instructed to stand elsewhere. Or else he'd be run over. Clearly, the dude did not take the drummer seriously. Big mistake.

TV Tidbits 74 - House, Amazing Race

First, I just saw this on EW.com and thought I'd pass it along to any House-watchers left out there:

Princeton-Plainsboro is undergoing another major shake-up: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Jennifer Morrison is leaving House.

Neither Fox nor Morrison’s reps would comment, but I’m told the actress did not quit; her exit was a creative decision on the part of producers. Morrison — the first of the show’s original cast members to depart — shot her last scene earlier this week and her final episode will air in November.

Suspicions about Morrison’s House future were raised last week when she was MIA at the show’s premiere screening in Hollywood.

Here’s what else I’m hearing about this surprising and, I’ll say it, disappointing, turn of events.

* Unlike Kal Penn’s dearly-departed Kutner, Cameron will not be killed off.

* Morrison’s on-screen husband, Jesse Spencer (Chase), is not leaving the show. (Do the math and you can probably figure out how she’ll be written out.)

* Producers are leaving the door open for Morrison to make a guest appearance later in the season.

The last point will prove little comfort to Cameron fans, especially since this was the season Morrison’s nearly three-year stint on the backburner was supposed to end. In fact, just last month series creator David Shore told me (video below), “Chase and Cameron fans will be happy with the way we’re going to reintegrate them into the team — at least on a temporary basis.” (That temporary qualifier should’ve been a clue.) Even Morrison recently admitted it was “great” being front-and-center again. “I have been working a lot,” she told us, “and there are things that happen to House very early in the season that have a domino effect on all of the other characters.”

I haven't watched House for a few years - in fact, I think Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison were still engaged in real life when I finally gave up on the show - but it seems that many a fan is outraged by this development. Apparently, now that Chase and Cameron are married viewers were expecting a bit more Chameron screen time. Oops. Sorry guys.

On a different note, the route for this season's Amazing Race (premieres this Sunday!) is up. If you DON'T want to know anything about this season's route, turn away now! Otherwise, scroll down and check it out. (Info courtesy of EW.com.)

It’s almost ‘go’ time: The 15th installment of The Amazing Race kicks off Sunday night on CBS. To get you in the spirit of celebrating the big 1-5, we offer a peek at the contestants’ route (see: above), along with a few teases supplied by executive producer Bertram van Munster (see: below).

• The action begins at the Los Angeles River, and for the first time in show history, a team will be eliminated mere yards from the starting gate. The challenge involves a fence with thousands of license plates—some of them from Japan (which serves as the first destination). “Twenty four people run up and frantically start grabbing license plates, but they’re wrong because as usual they don’t read their clue,” chuckles van Munster. “Eventually a team gets eliminated—they see the cars drive off and it is bye-bye. We told them 100 times, ‘Read your clue. Repeat after me: Read your clue.’ They don’t read the clue. It’s unbelievable. Nothing has changed.”

• Once they get to Tokyo, Racers find themselves on a Japanese game show, and they have to eat a tear-inducing Wasabi bomb. Notes van Munster: “Even the Japanese are horrified by it, which is good. If the Japanese are horrified by another game show, then we’re on the right track.”

• When contestants arrive in Vietnam, they face down a Roadblock involving 2,000 ducks. “You have to show how good you are in guiding these ducks from one end of a soccer field, across a little bridge to the other end, turning them around and bringing them back into the pen,” explains van Munster. “It turns into total duck madness. It’s just hysterical… I’ve tried for eight years to integrate it into the show, and we never succeeded in getting [contestants] to do it. They know it’s too difficult. So I said, ‘Roadblock!’”

• In Dubai, competitors will be presented with a chilling Detour: They have to take snow from an indoor ski area and build a snowman outside in the scorching Middle East heat. “The quality of the snow changes instantly the moment you bring it out,” chuckles van Munster. “And the snowman can’t be a little one—it has to be five-, six-foot-high snowman with eyes and a real carrot in his nose.”

• In another first for the show, one of Race’s most infamous Roadblocks is revisited. “It is so crazy and difficult to do, and it was so amazing the last time we did it,” says van Munster. “And it’s just as crazy and amazing this time.”

• Although this Race takes place over a relatively brisk 21 days, van Munster insists that it won’t be any easier. “Very often in the middle of the series, [the contestants] get kind of cozy with each other and there could be a little bit of a lull,” he notes. “In this race, there is no lull. There is pedal-to-the-metal competition. They’re constantly overtaking each other. Every time we stand at the finish line we were blown away who gets eliminated and who stays in.”

• Among the contestants to watch:

-Herbert and Nathaniel from the Harlem Globetrotters. (“Great sense of humor.”)

-Justin and his best friend Zev, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. (“The things Zev says are so right on the money and they come from left field… You’re gonna love that team.”)

-Professional poker players Maria and Tiffany. (“They are incredibly shrewd. They are tough as nails… They’d do anything to win. They blew me away.”)

-Keri and her aggressive lawyer-fiance Lance. (“He’s so combustible. He whacked a piece of wood so hard, he opened his hand.”)

• Van Munster adds that he prefers to feature fresh contestants rather than familiar faces on Race. “I was never fond of ‘All-Stars’ and stuff like that,” he explains. “A cast like this is proof that to have new people is always a good idea, because every time we find new characters, new stories, new energy, new karma, you name it.”

Old News That's News to Me

Well, it's only the beginning of the new season and I'm already one show lighter... and it hasn't even aired yet! Let me back up a bit... When I was trying to decide which new shows to try out, I consulted reviews in Entertainment Weekly and TVGuide.com as well as info and user comments from IMDb. When I checked out The Forgotten, I saw that Rupert Penry-Jones was listed in the cast. I hadn't read anything about him anywhere else but then I hadn't read a lot about the show, either. What I had read, however, sounded pretty doofy. But when I saw Rupert, one of my boyfriends from across the pond, was in it I was stoked! The plot sounded pretty bad but if RPJ is in it, I'm going to give it a whirl. Just this week, however, I started noticing a lot being made about Christian Slater's return to TV in The Forgotten. I didn't expect to see any press on RPJ being in the show because who knows who he is over here? But I was bummed to learn that Christian is in the show... My admiration for Rupe had to be strong in order to endure both a bad show and a bad actor! ;o)

I re-checked IMDb to make sure RPJ is still in the cast and surprise! He's no longer listed. So I did a little digging and discovered that RPJ was booted from the pilot way back in July! Bummer!!! After reading several TV blogs, the general consensus seems to be that the show is very much not good but that ABC is desperate to keep a Jerry Bruckheimer show in their schedule. The phrase I read most often was that the cast change is akin to "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." The show is still gonna go down sooner or later. I also read on more than one blog that there's a rumor floating around that, in order to save money, networks hired cheaper actors from outside the US for the pilots, with "the intent of dropping them in favour of bigger, more expensive names once the pilots had gone to series." (Apparently, this train of thought stems from the fact that two British actors beloved in their own country, RPJ and Richard Coyle, were
cast as leads in different shows and then promptly tossed aside once the shows made it to air.) Well, now that my boyfriend isn't on The Forgotten I hope it does flop! (Though, judging by this article, RPJ wasn't really all that put out to be axed from such a crappy show...)

From Pop Culture Nerd:

ABC’s THE FORGOTTEN Will Be Ignored By Me This Fall

July 6, 2009 · 13 Comments

Several months ago, I was excited about news of British thesp Rupert Penry-Jones (MI-5) coming to our shores to do a Jerry Bruckheimer pilot. I got even more excited when ABC picked up the pilot to series. But then the bad news came: Penry-Jones and Reiko Aylesworth (whom I liked in 24) would be replaced. I was displeased but wanted to see who the replacements would be.

TVGuide.com reports today that, while Aylesworth’s role hasn’t been recast yet, Christian Slater is confirmed to take Penry-Jones’s place. Whaa…?! On one hand, you’ve got a sexy and classically trained actor and on the other, you’ve got someone whose appeal I never understood even when his career was at its peak. Though I liked Heathers quite a bit, Slater drove me nuts with his Nicholson-lite poseur act. Last year, when he played a spy with a split personality on the NBC series My Own Worst Enemy, he couldn’t make even one persona compelling enough to keep me watching beyond the pilot.

OK. Now that my rant’s over, I think this may be best for Penry-Jones. Word is that the script was pretty weak and perhaps the actor (along with Aylesworth) was a scapegoat since ABC couldn’t exactly fire Bruckheimer. Penry-Jones was also forced to speak in an American accent (see clip here), which dulled some of his charm. Meanwhile, I’ve heard about another project which might be better for RPJ and allow him to retain his British accent.

Warner Bros. optioned for television a book called The Baker Street Letters (read my review here). It’s about two British lawyers (and brothers) who move into Sherlock Holmes’s address at 221b Baker Street and end up being amateur sleuths in Los Angeles after receiving letters addressed to Holmes from people asking for help. If Penry-Jones is still interested in working in America, he’d make an excellent choice as the suave older brother. It’s free casting advice, WB, so call RPJ’s agent and make it happen!

Here's a sneak peek of the show with RPJ still in the lead:

(It's probably just as well that RPJ isn't on the show anymore... he's definitely a little less hot without his natural accent! Bummer.)

Ah, Duckface.

I don't know if any of you watch Glee but I watched all of the first 3 episodes last night and I think it's a hoot. If you don't dig musicals you will certainly find the show grating but I think it's awesome. It's cute, it's funny, it's sweet, Jane Lynch is great as the frightening Cheerios coach and the songs are really good. But this isn't why I'm blogging. What I wanted to share was this: As I watched last night's episode ("Acafellas") I was struck by the guy that played the scary Vocal Adrenaline choreographer, Dakota Stanley. The dude looked soooooo familiar and I could picture the face of the character I thought I knew he'd played but I couldn't figure out what movie or TV show that character was from. It bugged me all night long and then, for some reason, this morning it hit me - he looked like an adult version of the guy that played Duckface on Full House! So, I looked him up on IMDb when I got to work and, sure enough, the actor who played Dakota Stanley - Whit Hertford - also played Howard (a.k.a. Duckface*) on 3 episodes of Full House. I KNEW it!!! I. Am. Good. Gooooooood. I say this all the time and I'm probably going to keep on saying it, but I sure do wish there was something I could do with such an odd talent. I'd be a millionaire! :o)

*
Stephanie and her friends made fun of him and his protruding pout before eventually befriending him. I found a short bio on Walter on Wikia:

Walter F. Berman is a school friend of Stephanie Tanner played by Whitby Hertford. At first, Stephanie disliked him, and went as far as teasing and imitating his resemblance to a duck. She -- along with the rest of the class -- even nicknamed him "Duckface". However, after following her Uncle Jesse's advice, she learned to appreciate Walter more, even if he was a nerd. This led to Walter briefly considering Stephanie as his "secret girlfriend".

Brought to You By the Letter M

Just a goofy little story that I meant to add on to yesterday's post but forgot to do so. Whenever I give Robert grief about changing my name, he will often bust out with "But it's an M name! I've made your dream come true!" Now, I've probably told you all this story (it may even be posted on the blog but the stupid search function on Blogger is crappy so I couldn't decide whether I'd posted the story previously or not!) before but for those few that don't know it, here it is.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to marry someone with a last name that started with M. That way, I could just hop to the other side of L in the alphabet - instead of being LLK I'd be LLM. For some reason*, I thought this would be the ultimate in cool. In fact, you know the game where you you push and pull on a soda tab as you say the alphabet and whatever letter the tab finally popped off on was the first letter of your future husband's last name? No? Was I the only girl that played that game? Hmm. Well, anyway, I would always either work the tab really forcefully or barely move it at all just to ensure that my tabs always came off on 'M.' I was a weird - but determined! - kid, what can I say? I made the mistake of telling Robert the story once and ever since he's used it as his main argument for my changing my name. The man can't remember where he left his toothbrush but he remembers a story I told him who knows how many years ago? Just my luck.

* It may be because my initials were always so awesome for video games. Other kids had to fly the cursor all over the world to enter in their initials but I only had to move once to the left. Fantastic! Naturally, moving just once to the right would be just as awesome. Why marrying a guy with a last name that started with L so I didn't have to move the cursor at all didn't appeal to me I do not know. (I probably [hopefully] thought it was too cutesy. I remember a teacher at Centerville, Mrs. Laurent, who wanted me to marry her son so I could be Lauren Laurent. [Which would basically sound like Lauren Lauren since Laurent is French and the 't' is silent. A la The Colbert Report. ;o) ] I vividly remember thinking that was the worst idea I'd ever heard. So the lesson here is be thankful your last name isn't Laurent, Robert! Or you'd be SOL!)

I Guess It's 'Official'...

My name is now Lauren McCauley. I waited and waited and waited to change my name on my e-mail accounts, etc., until all my ducks were in a row. But, now that I have my new driver's license, credit cards and the like I suppose I have reached the end of the road. (Actually, I really reached the end of the road on Thursday, when all of my work information changed. That made it truly "official" to me - it was the last peg to put in place.) As happy as I am to be married, I would be lying if I said it wasn't with some sadness that I say goodbye to my old name. I can't put a finger on what specifically sealed the deal as far as deciding to change my name goes - but I can say I thought about it long and hard with much waffling. I mean, not only is it a HUGE pain in the ass to notify everyone and their brother (from credit cards to mortgage companies to FasTrak...) that my name has changed but I've been Lauren Kimball for, well, my entire life. It's very hard for me to just sort of lop it off and have a new name. :o( I really don't know what finally swayed me to the 'pro' side but once I decided, I went from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. Once I make up my mind about something it's done!! I don't want anything hanging over my head; I want everything done and I want it done yesterday. So, I got all my new cards and submitted all my documents and now the deed is done. It is, of course, nice to be a McCauley and I'm sure I'll get more used to the change in time... but I will always be a Kimball at my core. :o)

Safest Cell Phones

A friend of mine posted this cell phone radiation chart on her blog so I thought I'd cheer you all up and pass the info along. I should have stuck with my Razr!!! Sure, I may not have been able to send text messages with ease... but at least my brain would not be slowly decaying! Yeesh! I went from a 0.36 rating to a 1.34! Great. I'm glad I have a device that emits enough radiation to pop its own popcorn next to my most critical organ. Good times.

(The chart is from Environmental Working Group's Web site; the chart link is here.)

Listing is based on phones currently available from major carriers. You can also see all phones (current and legacy) or all PDAs/Smartphones ranked by radiation.
