Fall 2013 Informational Bonanza!

I know I said I'd post on the Fall 2013 TV shows but in all honesty sifting through week(s)-old EW.com articles on my day off didn't really sound terribly appealing. Until, that is, I realized, two weeks late, that Go On has been canceled. Say que?!! I found out by completely random means and was so bummed I called Robert at work to voice my outrage. His response? "Oh. You didn't know? Even I knew. Wow. Did you know According to Jim also isn't on anymore?" Way to kick a lady when she's down, man. I know I've been painfully out-of-the-loop on entertainment things for a long time now but I do check the EW.com mobile homepage every day and I swear I never saw the cancellation as a headline*. SO not only is the show canceled but apparently it was so unloved that it didn't even warrant a headline! Suckballs! Now I've lost three shows in one season** and if The Mindy Project had been cancelled I may have been tempted to give up on network TV altogether! A person can only handle so much scripted drama, people. But the sadness has motivated to make sure other shows I like are still alive so here's what I've collected thus far. Y'all may already be in the know but I had to do this for me. Sigh.

*That's because the news was hidden inside a "Whitney Is Canceled" headline. No wonder I didn't click on it! Who cares about Whitney?!

**Apparently, if I want to watch the remaining 8 episodes of Don't Trust the B- I have to watch them on ABC.com. Greeeeat. Cause I wanna watch 4 hours of TV on my PC. Plus, they're out of order so I have to look up the correct order in which to watch them somewhere else! ABC is obnoxious.

***Sorry for the crappy formatting. I just don't have the energy to try and fix it anymore.

TV Tidbits : Updated (Series) Death Watch

We gave up on Up All Night because, well, it was very "meh." Not horrible but not hilarious and though I pull for Will Arnett (hi, meet the only person who watched Running Wilde), I just don't have time in my life for meh. Which begs the question "Why am I still watching A Gifted Man?" I don't really know. It's kind of a nice vacation for my brain for an hour, I guess. I dunno. I'm not surprised its odds aren't looking too hot right now but I'll probably hang with it for a while yet. Especially since they have been featuring his annoying ex-wife less and less. :o) We like Person of Interest so I'm glad it'll be hanging around but I still can't believe how many people love 2 Broke Girls. Clearly, my sense of humor is not in line with that of most of America. But I think we knew that already.

Here's the breakdown from EW.com:

New Girl (Fox): 5.0, 10 million.
Status: Fox was the first network to pick up a new show for a full season. We’re now focusing of that second year pickup, when we think her chances are rosy.
2 Broke Girls (CBS): 5.5 rating, 13.7 million.
Full season pickup. Notice the ratings: This is the highest rated new show of the 2011-12 season.

The X Factor (Fox): Wednesday, 4.4, 12.5 million; Thursday, 4.3, 12.6 million
Full season pickup.

Once Upon a Time (ABC): 4.7, 13.7 million.
Full season pickup. We’ll be brutally honest: After the middling launch for Pan Am and Revenge, we didn’t have high hopes for this high-concept drama from a couple of clever Lost writers. Sometimes, it’s a relief to be wrong. Show like this need to succeed if we want to see more genre shows in the future.

Terra Nova (Fox): 3.6, 10 million
Status: Fox executives already confirmed that it will complete its 13-hour run in December. The network will decide by the end of the year whether Terra Nova will get a second season. Though the dino drama is performing weaker than what the network wants, it’s still got a shot to return.

Last Man Standing (ABC): 3.7, 11.9 million.
Full season pickup. Not surprising: It was a big deal for ABC to get Tim Allen back. But with a new showrunner at the helm as of this month (last one left for personal reasons, new guy comes from Reba), job one is to keep refining Allen’s voice without boring viewers.

Suburgatory (ABC): 3.5, 10.1 million
Full season pickup

Person of Interest (CBS): 3.3, 13.8 million
Full season pickup

Revenge (ABC): 3.6, 10.5 million
Full season pickup. Good news for prime time soap fans.

Unforgettable (CBS): 3.0, 13.9 million
Full season pickup

Pan Am (ABC): 2.8, 8.3 million
Status
: The period drama has settled at a modest number and, as a result, has yet to get a full season pickup. ABC might complete its run at 13 and postpone a final decision on its fate until May.

How to be a Gentleman (CBS): 2.7, 8.4 million
Canceled

Up All Night (NBC): 2.7, 6.2 million
Status: Full season pickup plus two additional episodes. NBC will hang onto this for a full season because its from SNL’s Lorne Michaels.

Whitney (NBC): 2.7, 5.5 million
Status: Full season pickup for a show that doesn’t really belong on a network that has comedies like Parks and Recreation, The Office, 30 Rock and Community.

Allen Gregory (Fox) 2.2, 4.5 million
Status: Sandwiched between The Simpsons and Family Guy, this new animated comedy has been a real let-down. Fox only ordered seven episodes. Once they finish airing, we don’t expect the network to mention the show again.

Man Up! (ABC) 2.2, 7 million
Status: Man down? We think this is be the next freshman show to get a pink slip.

Grimm (NBC) 2.3, 6.8 million
Full season pickup

Charlie’s Angels (ABC): 1.8, 7.4 million
Canceled.

Prime Suspect (NBC): 1.7, 6.1 million
Canceled. So are networks done with reboots of old shows? Heck no: The peacock just ordered a pilot for The Munsters.

Playboy Club (NBC): 1.5, 4.9 million
Canceled

A Gifted Man (CBS): 1.4, 8.6 million
Status: Though the network has yet to give it a full season pickup, it recently ordered three more episodes. Still, we’re not feeling upbeat about its chances for another season.

Free Agents (NBC): 1.5, 3.8 million
Canceled

Secret Circle (The CW): 1.2, 2.7 million
Full season pickup

Rock Center with Brian Williams (NBC): 1.0, 3.9 million
Status:
Rock bottom with Brian Williams. This should go quietly into the night after the new round of shows debut after the holidays.

Ringer (The CW): 0.9, 1.2 million
Full season pickup

Hart of Dixie (The CW): 0.9, 2.0 million
Full season pickup

Hey, we can play death watch all season! Look at all the cannon fodder coming soon:
ABC: Work It (Jan. 3), The River (Feb. 7), GCB (March 4), Missing (March 15)
NBC: The Firm (Jan. 8), Are you there, Chelsea? (Jan. 11),  Smash (Feb. 6), Fashion Star (March 13)
CBS: ¡Rob! (Jan. 12)
FOX:  I Hate My Teenage Daughter (Nov. 30) Napoleon Dynamite (TBD), The Finder (TBD), Touch (TBD), The Flintstones (TBD), Alcatraz (TBD)
The CW: The Frame (TBD)

TV Tidbits 101: Fall Show Survival Odds

Per EW.com:

---

Sure, it’s only been two weeks. But sometimes, that’s all it takes for a new show to either earn a full-season order (congrats, Fox’s New Girl) or get the ax (time to start packing, Playboy Club?). Here’s how the new shows are faring so far among the ever-crucial adults 18-49 rating and our thoughts about which will still be alive come spring:

2 Broke Girls (CBS): 5.9 rating
Status: If this comedy were on other networks, it would have already earned a pickup. CBS tends to be conservative about giving early endorsements (and when it comes to its Monday night block, there’s a high bar for admission.) But a couple more strong performances by the gals should help seal the deal.
New Girl (Fox): 4.7
Status: Fox got to be the first network to pick up a new show for a full season. (Traditionally, the networks only order the first 13 and wait to pick up the back nine after seeing the ratings). Given the Zooey Deschanel show’s super-strong audience retention for its second episode and improving on its Glee lead-in, the move will likely pay off.
X Factor (Fox): 4.2
Status: It’s not exactly performing at the levels Simon Cowell expected it would. (He was out there saying anything less than 20 million would be a “disappointment.”) But the show has given Fox some unprecedented bragging rights — like how for the first time in Fox history has the net won the first two Wednesdays of a TV season. This show isn’t going anywhere.
Suburgatory (ABC) 3.3
Status: The comedy had a surprisingly good bow, in spite of its dreadful title and lead-in from ABC’s modestly rated comedy The Middle. Does it help being so close to Modern Family? Its definitely a good fit. If viewers return for Week 2, it’s unlikely the network will give up on this Jeremy Sisto comedy anytime soon.
Terra Nova (Fox): 3.1
Status: This would be a solid number — for just about any other show. The bar is set high for the expensive and heavily-hyped dino drama, and the premiere rating didn’t leave a lot of wiggle room. Terra Nova will not get a full season (Fox executives have confirmed that’s out of the cards); the question is whether the show will get a second season. Expect Fox to air all 12 weeks no matter what.
Pan Am (ABC): 3.1
Status: The period drama fell 19 percent from its premiere but reviews have been mostly favorable. And there are all those billboards! Unless this bird crashes in the coming weeks, we expect the gals to fly for a full season, at least.
Revenge (ABC): 3.0
Status: ABC has struggled to launch dramas at 10 p.m. and the network was hoping this modern day riff on The Count of Monte Cristo would be a break-out this fall. Emily VanCamp is a TV star and it’s great to see Madeleine Stowe on the small screen but this soap is not lathering up fans as much as ABC probably wanted. But it would be sacrilege to rip a soap off before the mystery is at least halfway unraveled so its seems likely the network will stick with this for a full season.
Person of Interest (CBS): 2.9
Status: The combination of Jim Cavaziel and Michael Emerson is just too good. Though the drama still has some kinks to work out, this one will likely go the distance until May.
Whitney (NBC): 2.9
Status: Has the highest average rating of NBC’s new comedies, but is not the best liked. UPDATE: Sorry haters, full season pick up
Up All Night (NBC): 2.7
Status: The Christina Applegate starrer has lost some of its 18-49 following across three weeks, but has had to self-start on Wednesday nights. Don’t expect to Peacock to give up on the latest laugher from uber-producer Lorne Michaels without a fight. UPDATE: Full season pick up
Unforgettable (CBS): 2.7
Status: A show that nobody talks about that did better than expected. Too early too tell.
How to be a Gentleman (CBS): 2.7
Status: It didn’t have the best opening — especially by CBS standards and given its giant Big Bang Theory lead-in. This show needs to improve or these gentlemen will be shown the door.
Charlie’s Angels (ABC): 1.8
Status: We’re not sure what’s more embarrassing — this show or those ratings. After dropping 29 percent drop for its second episode, we predict its demise before Thanksgiving.
Prime Suspect (NBC): 1.7
Status: Not the lowest-rated new show, but arguably the biggest disappointment. A crime procedural starring Maria Bello based on a known brand seemed destined to at least perform solidly in primetime, but was crushed by The Mentalist and Private Practice.
Playboy Club (NBC): 1.5
Status: The concept drew hostility among some conservative viewers, but also among conservative TV industry pundits — not for its content (which is tame), but for daring to violate the rule of trying to get broadcast-sized ratings with a narrow cable channel Mad Men-style concept. In short: Nobody is surprised this show is not doing well. UPDATE: Cancelled
A Gifted Man (CBS): 1.4
Status: The bar is set pretty low for Fridays so this drama starring Patrick Wilson could stay put for longer than you think.
Free Agents (NBC): 1.5
Status: Its most recent rating was at a 1.0. Even with NBC grading on a curve, this is a good bet for the first axed show of the fall.
Secret Circle (The CW): 1.1
Status: It’s no Vampire Diaries, but Kevin Williamson’s latest is still performing better than any of The CW’s other new shows, and the ratings ticking up a notch in Week 3 is what a network hopes to see.
Ringer (The CW): 0.9
Status: There’s no way the fifth network will slam the door on La Gellar, no matter how unremarkable her ratings are. This show will air for a full season.
Hart of Dixie (The CW): 0.8
Status: This rating is traditionally at the bottom of the barrel for a CW drama, and yet it was the premiere. Question is: Does CW have anything to put in its place?

---

I have been goon lately getting back into the groove of school (more on that later) but Robert and I have managed to stay pretty on top of the new shows we decided to try out. The only show that has been deemed so bad it didn't get the customary 3 episode trial run is 2 Broke Girls. Sweet Jesus that show is bad. The techs at my clinic think it's hilarious and clearly a lot of America agrees but I just don't get it. It is honestly like the writers had a big hat full of stereotypical items that make a show "funny," pulled a few out, added some strained dialogue and made a show. There's the tough, sassy lead; the hipster patrons; the oddly racist caricatures of the Asian manager, horny European cook and the straight-talkin' African-American cashier... It just does not do it for me. Thankfully, at least one other person agrees with me. Aside from that, though, we're still sticking with Person of Interest (the show we like best of the newbies), Up All Night (on the bubble), A Gifted Man (on the bubble and sliding off very quickly) and Subpurgatory (surprisingly funny!). We haven't tackled Terra Nova yet because the pilot is 2 hours long and we haven't had time to sit down and watch anything that long. How sad is that?

I miss summer vacation.

And here's the same info plus a little extra in a slightly different form, courtesy of TV|Line:

Both EW.com and TV|Line have excellent and comprehensive 'Fall TV Central' sections (here and here, respectively) so if you feel you need more info on something in particular, they would be great sites to visit.

The start of the new season is always a stressful time in my house (mostly for me but whatever) - not only is my previously barren TiVo chockablock full of all the new episodes of shows we already watch, we have to decide to which new shows we will grant the coveted 'season pass.' *sigh* As you know, I have whittled our list of such shows down quite a bit over the past year but the beginning of the season makes me feel as though I need to give most shows at least a 3-episode trial run, to make sure I'm not missing out on some comedic or dramatic gold mine. It's so time consuming!!! I've done a bit of reading in order to prepare my initial picks and it looks like the most buzzed about new shows are (in no particular order): Terra Nova, Person of Interest, 2 Broke Girls, Up All Night, Pan Am and Prime Suspect. I really want to like some more comedies but I have to admit that none of them sound super enticing. I will mostly likely give Girls and Night a whirl since I've seen them on a couple different 'choice pick' lists but I'm reeeeally struggling trying to figure out what other (if any) comedies to try. Subpurgatory and Last Man Standing are on the fence but that's pushing it. Drama-wise, I'm thinking Nova and Interest, Grimm and/or Once Upon a Time and A Gifted Man will get the trial runs with Pan Am and The Playboy Club on the fence. But very, very precariously on the fence.

Whew!! If you're still with me, this is the last leg, I promise. I'm trying to cultivate a roster of shows which I should focus on for spoilers and such. Aside from the shows we already watch and like (HIMYM, Modern Family, The Mentalist, Grey's, 30 Rock, Cougar Town, Project Runway, Top Chef, etc.), I have The Good Wife, Bones, Glee, and... I can't remember. Do I have any others? Feel free to comment and let me know. Current spoilers that I have for you are as follows:

Question: Do you have any hints on what’s to come on the new season of GLEE, especially for Santana and Brittany, separately or together? —Ghislaine
Ausiello: The word around McKinley is that Brittany will make a serious run for class president. And in potentially related news, I hear there’s an intriguing/hilarious story behind this photo, and we’ll find out what it is in Episode 2.

Question: Beggars can’t be choosers, so I’ll take any GLEE scoop you can spare. —Colin
Ausiello: A new glee club provides fresh competish for New Directions — and this particular group is much closer to home.

Question: Is anything good going to happen for Meredith and Derek on GREY'S, or is it all depressing stuff? —Samantha
Ausiello:
I hear Social Worker Janet (played Janora McDuffie), spied in the fresh batch of premiere pics, will return to Seattle Grace in October, which leads me to believe there’s trouble on the horizon with little Zola. On the brighter side, Derek continues to make progress on his and Mer’s McDream house. In fact, Episode 4 — aka the much-buzzed-about “all-male” hour — finds several of his colleagues lending a hand with construction.
Question: I, for one, love that Owen will be the new Chief on GREY'S. Any intel on how he’ll adjust to the new gig? —Theresa
Ausiello:
He won’t be hiding out in his office, mostly because… well, he won’t have one. I hear he’ll decide to ditch the traditional office and instead roam the halls armed with nothing but an iPad-esque tablet.

Question: Can we get any spoilers on How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney and Robin? We love this couple! —Juliet
Ausiello:
In the season opener, Lily urges Robin to crap or get off the pot with regard to Barney. “She encourages her to be honest about her feelings,” previews Alyson Hannigan. “‘Cause Robin’s playing it off like, ‘No, no, no.’ So Lily’s like, ‘Alright, then, prove it. Step up to the plate and tell Barney that it’s not going to happen.’ Something magical then happens, but you’ll have to stay tuned for that.”

Question: Any intel on which old girlfriend Ted runs into in the Sept. 26 episode of How I Met Your Mother? —Jane
Ausiello:
Nope, but I can tell you that it leads to a scene Josh Radnor says will “reward longtime fans” of the show. Per the actor, Ted challenges the gang to guess the identity of his ex. “And I don’t think he’s prepared for four-and-a-half pages of guesses from them of who this girl could be,” says Radnor. “They basically list every single girl that Ted has had any sort of encounter with over six years. It’s a pretty comprehensive list.”

Color me depressed because I really like Outsourced. After reading the message boards on IMDb I realize that I am the only person in this country who does but I'm telling you it's funny! It really is! Robert likes it. Even Biji likes it so you know it has the Indian seal of approval!! :o) I am an intelligent woman so I'm preparing myself for the worst, knowing that its odds for survival are less-than-good. But if you are not opposed, put in a good thought for Outsourced, would you? Manmeet and Rajiv need your help!
