TV Tidbits 100: New Fall Spoilers

From EW.com:

‘GREY’S ANATOMY’: FINALLY SOME MER/DER FOR YOU
I can’t tell you how often I get harassed lovingly asked for Meredith and Derek scoop, and after sitting through next week’s two-hour premiere with my mouth hanging open for 80 minutes (two hours, minus commercials), here’s what you’re going to get out of me on Mer/Der, Crowen, and Alex (who is sans nickname because he’s all alone. Poor Alex).

Mer/Der: Derek is pissed. VERY pissed. And that doesn’t change for much of the two-hour episode, except when it comes to Zola. When he has that baby in his arms, he’s a heap of adorable, protective daddy. Meredith is a good mom, too. In fact, I’d say, too good. And while Mer/Der fans should prepare for some fireworks between these two, as shown in the preview, there’s also one moment in the second hour that reminds you exactly why you love this couple. Sadly, it might be too little, too late in many regards.
Meanwhile, Crowen’s baby drama continues, and while I absolutely can’t tell you how it ends, I can say that it’s certainly going to affect Cristina and Owen this year. And this entire storyline will leave you so happy that two actors of this magnitude are paired up on this show. Because their scenes are out-of-this world good, especially one that takes place in the stairway.

And while Cristina isn’t battling with Owen, she’s taking out her frustrations on poor Alex. If she’s not kicking his ass (as shown in one of the promo pics), she’s almost accidentally killing him. But overall, he’s my MVP of the premiere for yet another fantastic scene in which he plays hero to a kid, his reaction to being shunned by everyone, and many more reasons not mentioned here (but possibly teased here).

‘HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’: YOU THINK YOU KNOW…
Before we jump into what I know about the season premiere of How I Met Your Mother (airing Monday!), let’s recap what we’ve been told (slash I’ve told you), shall we? It takes place at Punchy’s wedding, Barney and Robin will dance, we will revisit Barney’s wedding, Marshall and Lily are hiding their pregnancy news, Robin still has feelings for Barney (as hinted in last season’s finale), and Ted is a big-shot architect whose face has graced New York magazine but finds himself recommitted to the dating game. Holy hell, we know a lot. But, honestly, it’s also just the tip of the iceberg. So here are three monster teases to help you make it through the weekend.

1. There are not one, but TWO big announcements made in the first episode. You might be able to guess one very easily.
2. Remember the taxi scene from the season finale? There’s one comparably heartbreaking scene in the premiere involving the same people that you’re going to love!
3. What could possibly be a HUGE clue to one of the show’s major mysteries is revealed at the end of the first half hour. I hope someone picks up on it so we can discuss if I’m reading too much into this or if my hunch is correct.

From TV|Line.com:

Here are seven words guaranteed to leave you feeling drunk with happiness: Sarah Chalke is headed to COUGAR TOWN. Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the Scrubs MVP is joining ABC’s wine-soaked comedy for a major arc as a love interest for Brian Van Holt’s Bobby. The gig reunites Chalke with her former Scrubs boss (and C-Town co-creator) Bill Lawrence.

Her character, Angie, is described as a natural beauty with a cool vibe who meets Bobby through his son Travis (she’s his photography professor at college). I’m told that Chalke, who last headlined CBS’ short-loved sitcom Mad Love, is signed for multiple episodes of the show’s still-unscheduled (grrrr) third season.

Anything else you can share about my cul-de-sac cronies? —Ari
Ausiello:
Yup, I’ve got big casting news, and with it comes a ginormous spoiler alert. Eyes averted, if need be? OK, then. Grayson’s having a baby. Or rather, he had one a coupla years ago but didn’t know about it. Seems the reformed womanizer impregnated a young (real young) one-night stand who’s about to reenter his life — not to break up him and Jules, though. (Whew.) Rather, she wants to let him get to know his daughter. Who’ll play the part? Dunno yet. But it’s too bad an animated character can’t try out for the recurring role, because Holly — that’s the hot dimbulb’s name — sounds exactly like Drew Barrymore’s Family Guy alter ego, Jillian.

Question: ABC needs to bring back Cougar Town, like, yesterday. Meanwhile, I’d like some scoop today. —Carter
Ausiello:
Too bad Gilmore grande dame Kelly Bishop is tied up on Broadway in Anything Goes, because there’s a role coming up on C-Town that has her name written all over it. The show is getting ready to introduce Ellie’s (Christa Miller) never-before-seen mother, and, well, the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Mum — who is described as upscale, attractive and patrician — comes to town and charms the pants off of everyone. Ellie, meanwhile, keeps telling everyone that she’s the devil incarnate and that her alluring demeanor is nothing more than an act. I’m laughing already! Got casting tips? Hit the comments!

Question: BONES fan here dying for anything you can tell me about Daisy/Sweets. —Rex
Ausiello:
Daisy is going to be very supportive of Sweets’ decision to join Booth on the front lines this season. “With Brennan pregnant, Sweets wants to help Booth out in the field,” previews exec producer Stephen Nathan. “And Daisy kind of likes the idea of him with a gun. She’s a little bit more into it than she thought.”

Laser Pointers: Not Just For Kitties

I tried playing with Linguini the other night while Garfunkel was resting. I don't think Linguini got much out of it.

First Year in Review

As I sat on the couch, watching Friends (there's a marathon of 'best of' episodes every night this week on Nick@Nite) and feeling at loose ends, I decided I would finally try tackling a VT recap post. Part of what I like about blogging is that it serves as a sort of record of fun and important life events; as such, I should have been posting about my adventures in school and the clinic as they happened. Such posting would have painted a nuanced picture of my life as a vet tech student that I could look back on with appreciation as an older person. As it stands now I'll have one big spotty post that doesn't do justice to the blood, sweat, tears, stress, nausea, excitement and accomplishment that went into the first year of school. I guess that's better than nothing, though, so I'll scrape the corners of my brain and try to assemble a coherent, informative post that covers the stuff I haven't already touched on in earlier posts.

First up, grades. This was the easiest thing to assemble so it gets to go first. :o) Not mind-blowingly awesome but not too shabby, either. I hope I can do as well in the coming year.

I guess I'll tackle the clinic next, since it's the toughest to encapsulate and if I don't do it now, I'll just babble on until the post is 18 pages long. You all know me: I hate change and stress out about things way before they start so you can imagine all of the hand-wringing and whatnot going on at Casa de McCauley in the days leading up to my first day at the clinic. Well, that behavior pretty much followed me through the first couple weeks (at least), albeit to a lesser degree, because I like the knowable and clinic work is intrinsically unknowable. You just never know what is going to happen on a day-to-day basis and I HATE that. A lot. That's the stupid thing about me - it's not that the work is too hard. It's the fact that I have no idea what is going to happen that causes my anxiety to kick up to 1000 and then I can't think clearly. I make the simplest tasks exponentially more difficult because I literally cannot think past the fog that invades my brain when I'm stressed. It's completely ridiculous.

My supervisor didn't exactly help my nerves when he told me on two separate occasions that the clinic would no longer be accepting first-year students; they wanted 'more experienced hands only.' I asked if there was anything specific being done (not just by me but by the other two first-year interns) so that I could, y'know, stop doing that. Rof assured me there was no particular incident that sparked the clinic to issue such a mandate but I didn't really believe him and was freaked out even more after that. The practice manager and doctors weren't too warm and fuzzy toward the interns (and neither were the other veterinary assistants, for that matter) but I came to discover that my fellow Foothill Firsties were having similar receptions at their clinics, so I tried not to let it bother me too much. And Rof was actually a good instructor for all my mental-ness; after a while he could tell that I was a very competent and detail-oriented person who was hindered by a tendency to become "a fly on the wall." So he pushed me to jump in and forced me to participate when I would otherwise let my fellow interns do things for me. But he was friendly and did so in a non-threatening way so I wasn't constantly running to the bathroom and crying. :o)  (He actually never made me cry at all. I know that sounds like a very sad statement to make sound like an accomplishment but with me, it is!)

My internship course required me to spend 15 hours per week in the clinic and I lucked out with my choice of clinic because a lot of my friends basically did housekeeping duties for most of their hours. Rof pretty much let me jump right in from the get-go, so while I did do my fair share of laundry and restocking supplies, I also got to help restrain, administer medications to both patients and boarding animals, perform nail trims and 9-point exams, clean and wrap surgical instruments, observe surgical and dental procedures and even monitor anesthesia (with supervision, of course). I did lots of blood draws, administered lots of subcutaneous (SQ) fluids and was even working in the rooms by the end of the quarter. My clinic also has its own mini lab on-site so I got to perform blood analysis every so often, too. Everything scared me half to death most of the time but I took copious notes and muddled through. There was even the odd day when I would come home and excitedly tell Robert about something I'd seen or done. Those days were his favorite.

There are two stories that stick out in my mind with regard to my time at the clinic and I have actually already done a little write-up on them both (for a class assignment). They're not long and they're not the best samples of my writing ability but if you're interested, they do give a little peek into what kinds of things I encountered as an intern.

I witnessed my first euthanasia today (in just my second week at the clinic) and it was hard. I have never had to put any of my own pets down; Ziggy, my only childhood pet (a Cocker Spaniel), was put to sleep while I was away at college so I was not present for the event. When I was asked if I wanted to assist with retrieving the dog from the room, my immediate reaction was to say ‘no’ but I knew I was going to have to do it at some point so I let out a teeny, tiny ‘yes.’ It was awful; the entire family was in the room and the three young children were literally lying across the dog on the floor, crying, when we entered.  It took every ounce of willpower I had not to burst into tears at the sight of the weeping children.  We put the dog on the stretcher and took it into the back; the family didn’t want to be present and part of me thought that was selfish while the other part understood. Molly was given a handful of wet food before the catheter was placed and just like that, she was gone. I petted her as much and as long as I could, then I had to excuse myself and cried in the utility closet. Watching her die was hard enough but the sight of the techs basically dumping her body into a bag and carting her off to the freezer was just too much. I know that’s what has to be done and I know it will (unfortunately) be commonplace soon enough but the first one was tough to take. It really makes me question if I have the personality to succeed in this profession.
____________________
Good grief! Another sad one today. When I came in this morning I was excited to see that Savannah’s cage was empty – I assumed she’d gone home as planned. But as it turned out she’d taken a turn for the worse yesterday and had to be euthanized. I am heartbroken. Savannah had come in on Tuesday with a GI obstruction. She’d had two surgeries for the same condition in the past but the owners went ahead and had the doctors perform a third. Almost a pound of stuffed toys were removed from her abdomen! It was a long surgery and I was somewhat perplexed when the owners then wanted her to have a prophy performed on top of all she’d had done. Karen was in charge of her anesthetic recovery but over the next couple days I helped with her care. I coaxed her out for walks and spent a lot of time cleaning her and her cage, as she suffered from uncontrollable bowels for quite some time after the procedure. She always seemed depressed and a couple of times had a hard time getting out of her cage. She tried to walk on the tops of her paws, which made me nervous that she’d suffered some neurological damage while under anesthesia. After a few minutes we’d be able to right her, though, so I was optimistic that she’d be all right. When I left my shift on Friday night she seemed so much better – she was finally having firmer bowel movements and was eating more normally. She hadn’t thrown up for a day so the doctor said Savannah would likely get to go home sometime over the weekend. (Her owners had come to visit her several times over the past few days, which I thought was awesome.) Earlier I had overheard the vet talking to my supervisor and saying that these kinds of procedures often developed complications on the third or fourth day but I was willfully naïve and assumed Savannah would be fine. But she started bleeding internally on Saturday afternoon and nothing further could be done. I’m glad she’s not suffering but was still caught off guard by her passing. This was a sad Sunday indeed.

I know both of those were major bummers of stories but I got to see some cool stuff, too, I promise! I got to see a cat tooth extraction that was pretty great but you probably wouldn't be as interested in gum-slicing and tooth chiseling... ;o)

Yikes. Even with editing this post has amounted to quite a bit, hasn't it? I suppose I will lop it off here, then; I think you guys have a fair idea of how my actual classes went. School has its own stressors and the like but book learning really can't prepare you for real world experience. We are required to perform more and more complex duties with each successive quarter so I have a feeling I will be nauseous for the next 9 months. Actually, if I make it past the fall (Clinical Pathology and Radiology) and winter (Anesthesia - it scares the bejesus out of me already) quarters, I think I'll be in the clear. I hope.

Funk's Bro, Jasper

Remember this guy?

He's been returned to Pound Puppy Rescue because his "family can no longer keep him." And WHY NOT, Jasper's family? Ugh. Y'know, these kinds of things really frost my cookies. I mean, I understand that sometimes people find themselves in circumstances they didn't anticipate and I would, of course, rather have an animal returned to a rescue than risk being neglected or completely abandoned but pets are members of your family. People should understand before adopting that pets live many years and are a BIG responsibility - they should not be viewed as expendable items. I realize not everyone is as goo-goo for animals as I am but it really irks me when people don't realize just how affected animals are by such huge life changes. It's a big deal. I wouldn't give Garfunkel up for anything and I hope that Jasper's next home really IS his forever home.

Wrestling: Funk vs. Gweenz

Linguini and Garfunkel have definitely been getting along better since my last post. They're not BFF or anything but they have gotten to the point where they more than tolerate each other - sometimes, they even play together. Which is nice on those nights I'd rather eat my dinner than throw the one-legged hippo 4,000 times. :o) I caught them in the act the other day and started snapping away. Here's a little taste of Funk vs. Gweenz: The Smackdown.

There was no clear victor.

And as another example of their growing togetherness, here's a picture I took when someone thought I was taking too long getting his dinner ready. He's very lucky Funk's a good sharer.

And here's the same info plus a little extra in a slightly different form, courtesy of TV|Line:

Both EW.com and TV|Line have excellent and comprehensive 'Fall TV Central' sections (here and here, respectively) so if you feel you need more info on something in particular, they would be great sites to visit.

The start of the new season is always a stressful time in my house (mostly for me but whatever) - not only is my previously barren TiVo chockablock full of all the new episodes of shows we already watch, we have to decide to which new shows we will grant the coveted 'season pass.' *sigh* As you know, I have whittled our list of such shows down quite a bit over the past year but the beginning of the season makes me feel as though I need to give most shows at least a 3-episode trial run, to make sure I'm not missing out on some comedic or dramatic gold mine. It's so time consuming!!! I've done a bit of reading in order to prepare my initial picks and it looks like the most buzzed about new shows are (in no particular order): Terra Nova, Person of Interest, 2 Broke Girls, Up All Night, Pan Am and Prime Suspect. I really want to like some more comedies but I have to admit that none of them sound super enticing. I will mostly likely give Girls and Night a whirl since I've seen them on a couple different 'choice pick' lists but I'm reeeeally struggling trying to figure out what other (if any) comedies to try. Subpurgatory and Last Man Standing are on the fence but that's pushing it. Drama-wise, I'm thinking Nova and Interest, Grimm and/or Once Upon a Time and A Gifted Man will get the trial runs with Pan Am and The Playboy Club on the fence. But very, very precariously on the fence.

Whew!! If you're still with me, this is the last leg, I promise. I'm trying to cultivate a roster of shows which I should focus on for spoilers and such. Aside from the shows we already watch and like (HIMYM, Modern Family, The Mentalist, Grey's, 30 Rock, Cougar Town, Project Runway, Top Chef, etc.), I have The Good Wife, Bones, Glee, and... I can't remember. Do I have any others? Feel free to comment and let me know. Current spoilers that I have for you are as follows:

Question: Do you have any hints on what’s to come on the new season of GLEE, especially for Santana and Brittany, separately or together? —Ghislaine
Ausiello: The word around McKinley is that Brittany will make a serious run for class president. And in potentially related news, I hear there’s an intriguing/hilarious story behind this photo, and we’ll find out what it is in Episode 2.

Question: Beggars can’t be choosers, so I’ll take any GLEE scoop you can spare. —Colin
Ausiello: A new glee club provides fresh competish for New Directions — and this particular group is much closer to home.

Question: Is anything good going to happen for Meredith and Derek on GREY'S, or is it all depressing stuff? —Samantha
Ausiello:
I hear Social Worker Janet (played Janora McDuffie), spied in the fresh batch of premiere pics, will return to Seattle Grace in October, which leads me to believe there’s trouble on the horizon with little Zola. On the brighter side, Derek continues to make progress on his and Mer’s McDream house. In fact, Episode 4 — aka the much-buzzed-about “all-male” hour — finds several of his colleagues lending a hand with construction.
Question: I, for one, love that Owen will be the new Chief on GREY'S. Any intel on how he’ll adjust to the new gig? —Theresa
Ausiello:
He won’t be hiding out in his office, mostly because… well, he won’t have one. I hear he’ll decide to ditch the traditional office and instead roam the halls armed with nothing but an iPad-esque tablet.

Question: Can we get any spoilers on How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney and Robin? We love this couple! —Juliet
Ausiello:
In the season opener, Lily urges Robin to crap or get off the pot with regard to Barney. “She encourages her to be honest about her feelings,” previews Alyson Hannigan. “‘Cause Robin’s playing it off like, ‘No, no, no.’ So Lily’s like, ‘Alright, then, prove it. Step up to the plate and tell Barney that it’s not going to happen.’ Something magical then happens, but you’ll have to stay tuned for that.”

Question: Any intel on which old girlfriend Ted runs into in the Sept. 26 episode of How I Met Your Mother? —Jane
Ausiello:
Nope, but I can tell you that it leads to a scene Josh Radnor says will “reward longtime fans” of the show. Per the actor, Ted challenges the gang to guess the identity of his ex. “And I don’t think he’s prepared for four-and-a-half pages of guesses from them of who this girl could be,” says Radnor. “They basically list every single girl that Ted has had any sort of encounter with over six years. It’s a pretty comprehensive list.”

TV Tidbits 98: The Amazing Race 19

This is actually sort of old news by now - the info's been out a week! - but it'll be new to Robert and that's what counts. :o) So! Without further ado, here's the breakdown of this season's competitors:

And here's a slideshow of the teams. My early pick? It's tough to say. I guess I should pull for Sandy and Jeremy since the former is from Dublin but I feel more of a pull toward Cindy and Ernie. I cannot see myself ever rooting for someone who lists their current occupation as "soul searching" (twin Marie), recession or not.

Also, according to TV|Line, "Season 19 of The Amazing Race (premiering Sunday, Sept. 25) will include first-time visits to locations such as Indonesia, Malawi, Belgium and Denmark, and a new penalty called the “Hazard,” which will impact one team’s fate right from the starting line." Interesting... only time will tell if the Hazard will fare better than the Intersection.

Foothill's Adoptable Animals

I recently got a bee in my bonnet to help promote the Foothill animals and find them homes. Because we really shouldn't have any dogs or cats on campus right now - the goal has always been (and has, until this year, been accomplished) to have the animals during the school year but have them adopted out by before summer. No animal is supposed to spend more than one academic year at the school. Well, unfortunately, we fell a bit short this year - we still have one original dog and cat living in our kennels. We also have recently come into three new kitties, the result of surrenders needing some sort of placement ASAP. It absolutely breaks my heart to see these guys cooped up, day after day, with little human interaction; all they get are the few minutes allotted to them during Animal Care twice a day. So after one of my shifts a couple weeks back I took a few photos of each of our resident cats so I could post their photos on Facebook and the blog to get the word out. Here we go.

This is Billy. He's a three-year-old, 15-pound, domestic long-haired cat. He was hit by a car back in '10 and lost his front left leg as a result but he has no problem hopping around. I've seen him make some pretty big jumps; he gets along just fine. He's super friendly (the friendliest of all our cats, I think), very loving and likes to drink water from the tap. :o)

This is Cleopatra. She's also three years old, weighs 10 pounds, and is a domestic short-haired cat. She's a curious gal who has already been spayed and has lived at Foothill the longest of all our cats - she's definitely ready for her forever home.

This handsome fella is Mo Mo. He's a five-year-old, 15-pound, domestic medium-haired cat who has also been neutered. Mo Mo was surrendered along with his brother, Chopper, because his family had to move and could not bring the cats with them. He's a very sociable guy who loves pets and wrestling with Chopper so if they could be adopted together, that would be ideal.

And THIS big guy is the aforementioned Chopper: he's Mo Mo's litter mate, is neutered, and weighs in at a pleasantly plump 16.5 pounds. He is also a very social and affectionate guy and he loves scratching posts and chasing tennis balls. Lucky would be the house that adopts Mo Mo and Chopper! :o)

And because I am a weird animal lady, I whipped up a few posters for these guys. I did it pretty quickly and have since decided I might tweak'em a bit but if any of you would be willing to post them anywhere, lemme know and I'll e-mail you the original files. I REALLY want to find homes for these guys so any help - word-of-mouth, Fb posts, etc. - is welcome. :o)

Darth Vader = Sith for "Wanker"

Ugh. I'll never forgive Lucas for changing the "Yub Nub" song at the end of Jedi. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know everyone hates the Ewoks but the original song rocked! (And the xylophone segment matched perfectly with the helmet playing @ 0:25!) The new one sounds like Yanni and Zamfir made guest appearances on Endor. Yuck.

From EW.com:

New 'Return of the Jedi' Blu-ray has questionable addition: Darth Vader screaming 'Nooooo!'

Star-Wars-Darth-Vader

George Lucas has been tweaking the original Star Wars saga for so long now that it almost doesn’t make sense to complain anymore. At this late date, the tweaks have generally become so minor and unimportant (Oooo, now we’ll be bored by a digital Yoda in The Phantom Menace!) that the aging Star Wars fan almost feels the need to defend Lucas’ eternal tinkering: “Hey, so long as Lucas still lets us have our beloved original theatrical versions, with Han shooting first and John Motherfreaking Dykstra in the house, who cares if he turns the Max Rebo band from a badass space-jazz doo-wop band into an obnoxious late-90s swing-rock collective?”

And yet, there is something horrifically familiar about the decision — much-discussed on the internet and officially confirmed by the New York Times — to make Darth Vader squeal “Noooo!” during the climax of Return of the Jedi on the film’s new Blu-Ray edition. First, because it makes one of the few subtle moments in Jedi feel just as hackneyed and forced as everything else in that Ewok-plagued film. Second, because now we know that George Lucas will not rest until every member of the Skywalker family screams like a girl. And third, because this new “Noooo!” is a slap-in-the-face reminder of the infamous “Nooo!” that ended Revenge of the Sith, the precise moment when Darth Vader stopped being one of the great villains in cinema history and started being a punchline.

So what I’m saying is, just watch the new “Noooo!” and see if your heart doesn’t hurt:

I Found It!

Just like I said I would. I didn't rest and *poof* the missing photo album (that I didn't realize I was missing) was located under the futon. Random. But I found the note from Grandma re: the hamburger mandate and here it is:

I actually couldn't remove it safely from the photo album so it's a scan of the entire page. (Those legs in the upper left corner belong to John Stovall - it's a photo of him in France while on his mission.) Very sweet. :o) And I'm SO RELIEVED I found it! It's an important memory. Plus, it drives me absolutely bonkers when I can't find things. I just cannot rest.

And, as an added random bonus, here's a photo of the Loyd/Buckmaster ladies I found a few pages before the card. It was taken in October 1999 so there might be another photo of the same peeps all together in one photo but I don't think there is. So even though Grandma looks... let's go with unenthused... I thought I'd post it.
