TV Tidbits 03

Here are a couple of blurby-poos about Top Chef and Rock of Lurv, courtesy of realityblurred.com:

1. Top Chef 4 is 'Too Profane' -

In a weird little coda at the end of Top Chef 4 last week, the contestants erupted into a fight, sort of, that was difficult to parse because so many people were getting made at each other for different reasons—and because the whole thing was a big bleep-fest.

As it turned out, some people, including head judge and chief ornery bastard Tom Colicchio, have noticed that this season has more profanity, and they’re not happy. People leaving comments on BravoTV.com, always the best gauge of public opinion, “had criticized this season’s profanity from ‘day one’ and that Bravo, which broadcasts ‘Top Chef,’ had received complaints as well,” The New York Times reports, attributing the information to Colicchio.

Tom said that “the way they’re bleeping” might be problematic. The Times artfully describes that by noting that “Bravo’s censors leave much of the offending syllables intact. … Instead of a fig leaf, the network holds up a sprig of parsley.”

Andy Cohen told the paper that the profanity has been striking but is just the way these chefs are. “It’s struck us from the first cut we got of the first episode. At the network all we can do is bleep like crazy and, you know, maintain our standards while maintaining the integrity of what’s going on in the kitchen. I mean look, it’s who these people are, and we try to show these people as they are.” One of the current contestants, Spike Mendelsohn, said his family was shocked and “I was actually surprised myself when I watched it. I didn’t want to be so foulmouthed.” But he also doesn’t wish he’d done something differently. “Not at all, that’s who I am,” he said

2. If you haven't seen the Rock of Lurv finale, STOP READING NOW!!!!! Seriously. Robert, I'm talking to you - you don't want to know who won! (ROL is one of our favorite shows so you would think we've seen the finale already. But, because it's the last episode, I'm saving it until I just can't wait any longer. I hate when it's over!!) Anyhoo, apparently the finale really isn't the last episode because there's a reunion ep coming up this Sunday... during which Daisy and Heather get into a knock-down, drag-out fight. Sweet! -

This Sunday at 9, VH1 will air a reunion of the Rock of Love 2 women and Bret Michaels. And let’s just say runner-up Daisy and Heather from season one are not exactly friends. Here’s their violent confrontation, which is one of the most physical altercations reality TV has seen in some time:

Meanwhile, Daisy told VH1 that she and Bret “actually didn’t officially have sex until the very last night, and that’s what hurts my feelings. Of course, Heather just wants to make me look bad and make up s*** or whatever the f*** her problem is. But the fact of the matter is that we did not have sex until the end. During the last elimination, he knew that I was very emotionally attached to him because we’d been physical, and I just thought it was really uncool.”

As to her feelings for Bret, Daisy says, “It took me a good two months to recover from everything. Not just Bret, but everything that happened. I kept replaying it in my head, wondering what I did wrong and thinking why. I felt like if he didn’t like me, if he wasn’t making the connection with me, I almost wish he would have eliminated me a long time ago. Am I over him? Yeah. Every time I see him, it brings back those really emotional feelings. But I don’t think that Bret understood that there’s not going to be any type of physical relationship with him unless we’re in a relationship. That’s just how I work.”

Bubble Shows

Have you been anxiously awaiting word on whether or not your favorite bubble show is going to live to see another season? If so, this won't really clear things up for you completely but it may offer a helpful hint as to whether or not you should just stop watching right now. :o) For my part, I really like Aliens in America and Reaper, which scored a 3 and a 4, respectively. Which, by the by, were the lowest scores on the list, save the zeros. And the zeros on the list are clearly past the point of resuscitation. My shows are not - save them!!! :o( It's too late for Journeyhombre but not for these guys... c'mon, people!

Courtesy of TVGuide.com:
  • Aliens in America
The bad news: The ratings suck.
The good news: The show doesn't. It's really funny — and the CW knows it.
Odds of Survival: 3
  • Back to You
The bad news: It didn't experience enough of an American Idol bump back in February to make it a lock for next season.
The good news: Fox is as enamored of the show as Kelsey Grammer's character is enamored of himself.
Odds of Survival: 7
  • Big Shots
The bad news: Horrible show + even worse ratings = buh-bye.
The good news: Lots of really talented actors are free to appear in better TV shows!
Odds of Survival: 0

The good news: It continues to be a solid, if not spectacular, performer for ABC.
Odds of Survival: 6
  • Cane
The bad news: Nestor Carbonell is back on Lost!
The good news: Nestor Carbonell is back on Lost!
Odds of Survival: 2
  • Cashmere Mafia

The good news: One less Sex and the City clone to clog up the airwaves!
Odds of Survival: 0
  • Cavemen
The bad news: Oh, where to begin....
The good news: I can stop feeling sorry for the inimitable Julie White. She deserves better, and maybe now she'll get it!
Odds of Survival: 0
  • Eli Stone
The good news: Following Desperate Housewives, it scored its highest ratings since its premiere. Even more importantly, ABC loves it!
The bad news: Eli needs to hang onto the extra viewers it gleaned from Desperate when it returns to its regular Thursday time slot tomorrow.
Odds of Survival: 7
  • How I Met Your Mother
The bad news: Rumor has it not everyone at CBS loves this show.
The good news: Ted and the gang have been on a ratings roll since their Britney bump. The laffer is also the Eye's youngest-skewing show. Translation: Wait for it, wait for it... they'd be insane to cancel it!

The bad news: For starters, it's been canceled.
The good news: NBC has yet to release the actors from their contracts, raising hopes for a possible two-hour wrap-up.
Odds of Survival: 0

The good news: CW has yet to officially cancel it. But that may be because they forgot it exists.
Odds of Survival: 0
  • Men in Trees
The bad news: The audience is small…
The good news: … but passionate. And loyal. And resourceful. It also enjoys solid support at ABC, schizophrenic scheduling aside.
Odds of Survival: 5
  • Moonlight
The bad news: Another backstage shake-up has left the series without a show-runner.
The good news: Fans are batty over this vampire drama and have even gone so far as to organize a blood drive with the Red Cross to draw attention to it.
Odds of Survival: 8
  • New Amsterdam
The bad news: The fact that Fox trimmed its initial order for the show doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
The good news: It's held up surprisingly well ratings-wise.
Odds of survival: 6
  • New Adventures of Old Christine
The bad news: CBS doesn't own the show. It does, however, own Rules of Engagement, and the buzz is that the network only has room on its sked for one of them.
The good news: It's the funniest traditional sitcom out there. Plus, ABC is waiting in the wings to pick it up should the Eye cancel it.
Odds of Survival: 6
Odds of moving to ABC if CBS should cancel it: 10
  • Reaper
The bad news: Creatively, it failed to live up to the lofty expectations we had for it after that flawless pilot. And the ratings? Hellish.
The good news: Um, the pilot was really good! And there's no denying that there's a decent show in there. Somewhere.
Odds of Survival: 4
  • Shark
The bad news: James Woods is a, um, colorful personality. I'll just leave it at that.
The good news: Earned solid, if not spectacular, ratings on Sunday night.
Odds of Survival: 5
  • Terminator: TSCC
The bad news: For as much money as Fox poured into this show in terms of promotion and special effects, it should've done better.
The good news: The network seems to think it will do better next season — it's already staffing up.
Odds of Survival:
9
  • The Unit
The good news: Performed consistently for the Eye.
The bad news: As expensive as it is to produce, it needs to be doing consistently better.
Odds of Survival: 5
  • Women's Murder Club
The bad news: I hear the cast and crew are looking for other work.
The good news: After knocking at death's door, Club landed a new show-runner and three more episodes to prove itself. It'll have to if it wants a second season.
Odds of Survival: 4

Gelatinous Orbs

Here's a good Robert story for you... Well, let me first preface it by saying that Robert is a very nice man and a good boyfriend. He does the grocery shopping for our little family every week and on this particular trip he remembered to buy butter when I neglected to tell him, so he earned some good brownie points. Which he promptly lost (well, at least some!) by pulling out a carton of fat free milk. Fat free milk?!! No, no, no, no, no. When I screeched at him that this is not at all what we drink (I'm a 1% gal, he's a whole milk guy - you can tell by his staggering height and rippling muscles, no? - so we usually get 2%), he said "But it's blue!! I buy blue!!" *sigh* When he buys Lucerne (what we usually get), he either buys an ugly yellow (1%) or a light blue (2%) carton. CARTON. When he buys Sunnyside, he usually buys the 2% plastic jug that comes with a dark blue label. A dark blue label does not a dark blue carton make, man! But, he saw dark blue and that's what he bought - no matter that, in bold, white letters on the front of the carton, it said "fat free milk." Reading? Pbth. That stuff is for losers!
So, I asked him: "Have you ever bought a dark blue carton?" "No. But..." Ah, buh buh buh - no buts. If you insist on selecting your purchase solely by color, you need to pay attention to what color(s) you have previously purchased! Duh. Open up those gelatinous orbs in your head and look at it, man! Oy. ["But light blue and dark blue are practically the same!" Again, if you insist on only going by color, you need to pay attention to the nuances between them!] This is exactly how I ended up with two gallons of egg nog at Christmas... The carton was light green, just like the 1% milk was at the time, only the egg nog had big, giant, red holly berries on the carton. Oh, and it said "e-g-g n-o-g." But, apparently, Robert didn't read then, either. :o)

Tickled My Funny Bone

I saw this blurb on Defamer and it made me laugh:

Actor/King of Malibu Mel Gibson expressed his dismay with escalating gas prices while filling up in the 'Bu yesterday afternoon. Gibson asked the gentleman at the pump across from him if he knew why the prices are so high and the man blurted out, "Cause Bush is a dick." Gibson shook his head and muttered, "No, that can't be it."
(Hee! I dunno... it tickled me.)

TV Tidbits 02

1. First, the good news: Deadliest Catch is back! Robert and I have watched this show from the beginning and really enjoy it. From the outside it seems repetitive, I know - ooh, they go crabbing... every week. But it actually is a very interesting show; I highly recommend it. And it's become quite popular - there are ads all over the place for the season premiere tonight and the Web is chockablock full of DC sites. The Discovery site is far more fleshed out than it used to be - there are videos, blogs, online cards, podcasts, etc. - and every boat has its own site, too. (There's even a game coming out this month for the Xbox about crab fishing!) My favorite boat is the Northwestern, of course. No, there are no hot guys on this particular show (though Edgar Hansen is supposedly a fan favorite), so that's not my criteria. It's a boat own and operated by three brothers (yes, all three work the boat even though you only see two on the show - Norman does not want himself to be filmed) and they're just funny guys. I really like the brothers' interactions, the liveliness (and competence!) of the entire NW crew and, hey, they're always the best. :o) And Captain Sig is a series consultant so, you know, he's darn good. Captain Phil is pretty good, too, though - he is a funny guy and very animated. He's much more palatable since his haircut... and, apparently, he's single! ;o) (Though, I've never seen a human being smoke as much as he does, so you may need to act fast, ladies...) The Cornelia Marie has gotten a bit more fun now that his sons are also working on board. Anyway, I am excited the show is starting up again and wanted to get the word out...

2. And now, the bad news: tonight's NCIS is all Abby-centric. Bleh. She drives me bonkers! I just think she is absolutely ridiculous and annoying and... well, I already voiced my wish for her demise in an earlier post so I'm sure you understand my dislike by now. Anyhoo, tonight's episode is all about Abby trying to defend a dog from a murder rap. TVGuide.com's summary:

Abby's career is in danger of going to the dogs — literally — when the forensics specialist stubbornly defends a canine suspected of mauling its owner to death... "All the evidence points to the fact that the dog did it," says executive producer Shane Brennan. "But Abby's determined to prove that the dog is innocent." Which leads to an admonishment from Gibbs, who believes the German shepherd is responsible for the death and warns Abby not to get attached. Her response? "She calls the dog 'Jethro,'" Brennan laughs. "There's a lot of opportunity for humor in it." The episode also marks one of the rare times the Goth gal leaves the lab — in her very Abby-appropriate car, no less. "We see her driving a car for the first time," explains Brennan. "It's a red hot rod [adorned with] skull-and-crossbones decorations and coffin emblems. It really works."

Greeeeeeeeeeeeat. Sounds fantabulously interesting, doesn't it? I'm sure oodles of hilarity will ensue. I really wish sarcasm was more easily translated in print...

3. Wow!! People are exiting shows right and left!! Diane Neal is leaving her post as ADA on L&O: SVU!! Ausiello has the scoop again:

A show spokesperson confirmed the actress' departure, saying, "Diane spent five years on SVU and was a tremendous addition to the SVU team. She is looking forward to new opportunities and she will be missed."

Neal, who will make her final appearance in next month's season finale, joined SVU in 2003 as A.D.A. Casey Novak, replacing Stephanie March. She had previously appeared in a Season 3 episode as a different character, a female rapist by the name of Amelia Chase.

The search for a new A.D.A. is already underway, and, sadly, bringing March back doesn't appear to be an option. Word is Dick Wolf is looking to fill the void with an up-and-comer.

I didn't particularly care for Diane when she first started; I really preferred Stephanie's Alexandra Cabot to Casey. However, I've definitely gotten used to her and I just hate meeting new characters on shows I like!! Meh. Bummer.

TV Tidbits 01

Okay... since these "TV Tidbit" posts keep popping up lately, I'm going to start numbering them and that way I won't have to think of a clever title every time. Suck it up, people!

Here's my latest blurb, courtesy of TV Guide's Ausiello, on CSI:

With all the attention focused on William Petersen's successful contract negotiations, this ginormous scoopbit nearly slipped right by: Sources confirm to me exclusively that original CSIer Gary Dourdan — whose contract is also set to expire next month — has informed producers that he is leaving the show.

Although a precise timeframe is not known, CSI's May 15 season finale could serve as Warrick's swan song. Regarding Dourdan's exit, a CBS spokesperson says, "We can't confirm or deny this information."This is the second major departure to rock CSI this season. As anyone with a pulse and/or access to TVGuide.com knows, Jorja Fox made her final appearance as Sara in November. The good news: Marg Helgenberger and George Eads are expected to follow Petersen's lead and re-up with the show.Meanwhile, CSI execs aren't wasting any time searching for Dourdan's replacement. I'm told producers have put out a casting call for a new male series regular in his late twenties to early thirties to play Ray Santoro, a "handsome, smart and athletic" CSI who transfers from Henderson to join the graveyard shift at the Las Vegas crime lab.

CSI is one of the shows affected by the strike, at least in my house. Neither Robert nor I missed the show at all while it was gone and so have since decided to delete its season pass on our TiVo. The show has been dragging for the past couple seasons, in my opinion, and the strike was just the kick in the pants I needed to ditch this show for good. From what I can remember, however, Warrick wasn't featured too prominently in any of the episodes since... uh... well, that one episode after he got married and Catherine was all pissed off about it. Or something. Anyway, his storyline always seemed kind of weak and I definitely think Gary has had his eye on greener pastures for some time now. Rumor had it that part of the reason he wasn't in the show too often was because he was off "filming movies" and had requested a more lenient schedule with the show. Has he been in some movies? Yes. Have you heard of or seen any of them? No. Still, I'm not surprised Gary's decided to leave and, quite frankly, I don't care. But you might, so here - a gift from me. :o)

'Chocolate' is LG for 'Piece of Crap'

Poo to you, Chocolate!! I've never liked you and now you're gone... yay! Ptooey! I shan't miss you at all.

In a way, I guess it serves me right; I am hardly ever sucked into cutesy things and should have known better than to buy the 'hot new phone' when it came out. I never buy girly, gimmicky things, man! I really should have known better.

Robert and I have both hated our phones since about five minutes after we walked out of the store and have been anxiously awaiting the expiration of our 2-year contract. Unfortunately, we just passed the 1-year mark on March 31st, so we have a bit to go, yet. Well, Robert does, anyway... (un)luckily, my phone bit the dust early last week and I purchased a new one on Saturday. Luckily because, well, I obviously hated my phone and welcomed the opportunity to get rid of it early. Unluckily because phones really aren't too cheap when you can't take advantage of the deals associated with two-year contracts. So, I wound up with a Razr. Yeah, it's an old model and wouldn't normally be my first choice but I basically just needed a phone that worked. I don't use my cell terribly often and really just wanted something that I could make a call with should anything unpleasant befall me. I probably could have hung onto the Chocolate and hoped it worked when I needed it to, but that wasn't a risk Robert was willing to take (nor was my dad). And, in the end, I think they're right - I definitely feel safer knowing I have a phone that works all the time!

In general, the Chocolate is a big pile of dog doo. The touch buttons are either too sensitive or not sensitive enough - never a happy medium. More often than not I'd hit a button I didn't mean to hit with my ear while I was talking or when my phone was in my purse. I accidentally called Robert from my purse once while shopping in Long's and all he heard was 10 minutes of rustling... he had visions of me being kidnapped and making a last-ditch call to him for rescue! Poor guy. Then my Chocolate started freezing up on me; the only way to clear the screen and get the phone back to a usable state was to remove the battery and reinsert it. That started about 6 months ago. Then, about two weeks ago, I wasn't able to rectify the situation with the battery re-do - the phone just froze and then wouldn't turn on at all. After a few hours I could coax it back to life but what good is a phone that only works every three hours?! I'll tell you - not much. Then, last last week, I was in the midst of trying to revive the phone once again when it emitted a weird "squarnk" and went black, never to be heard from again. I couldn't get it to work for two days and so made the trip to Verizon to get a new phone. I logged into Consumer Reports' Web site to scope out what phone I might like to buy and boy, I wish I'd done so before I bought the Chocolate. Everyone and their mother hates the stupid thing! Even the saleswoman at Verizon said it was a crap phone. I wish someone had told us that when we bought it... of course, that wouldn't have been the phone effective sales technique! Anyway, I now have a phone that works that isn't the Chocolate and Robert is jealous. All is right in the world again. :o)

Meh... More More TV Tidbits

1. Numb3rs: David Krumholtz blogged on TVGuide.com about his upcoming storyline involving Charlie finally getting some FBI training. This makes total sense to me - I don't know when the man has time to teach, he practically lives at the FBI! And Don's team seems more inept by the minute since they can't seem to solve anything without Charlie's help. Are we really supposed to believe Charlie would've remained simply a "consultant" all this time? Then again, TV shows aren't usually based in reality so I should probably not care! :o)

This week's Numbers episode, "Checkmate" — written by Robert Port and directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal — finds Charlie Eppes sent to FBI training... finally. This is a storyline I've been anxiously awaiting to perform since the inception of the series. When a show like this is pitched to an actor, the actor's mind races through all the possible storylines was good enough to make an "old" actor happy. (I'll be 30 in five weeks — eek!) Charlie's curiosity gets the best of him and he requests to be sent to FBI training in the hopes that he may learn more about the intricacies of FBI work, and thus form a greater kinship with his brother and the other agents. Factored in (no pun intended) is the fact that Charlie has been shot at twice, pursued Port wrote was an absolutely in a high-speed car chase, and faced general danger scenarios at defend himself. What Mr.hilarious storyline, true to what would for his character. This is a storyline that I thought would have been written earlier into our run, and I've been encouraging our writers to flesh out the idea for four seasons now. And finally, Robert Portdifferent points throughout his consultation with the FBI. So, it's high time that he learn to probably happen if a young mathematician had a gun put in his hand. The three scenarios are High Pursuit Tactical Driving, Prisoner Take Down & Escort, and the Gun Range. When you are one of the youngest cast members on an action-packed show and you never get to see your fair share of the action, it's a great release when it finally happens. Needless to say, your boy was super-psyched! This was the most fun I've probably ever had on the show, and I hope that spirit comes across in the performance.

To start, we filmed the High Pursuit Driving. A stunt double would film the exterior shot in my place... but no need. The interior shot with me at the helm and the FBI instructor in the passenger seat was filmed as I haphazardly navigated the actual driving course. I didn't hit a single cone or cardboard cut-out (except when the scene called for it). It was awesome, high-adrenaline and way too much fun. Watch a clip:Next we shot the Prisoner Take Down. I decided to do my own stunt which required that I be flipped over an FBI agent's knee and slammed onto a gym mat. I thought i was being brave, but in retrospect I was just being plain stupid. That dude slammed me hard! My head snapped back and I saw stars as is evidenced by the actual shot of the moment that is used in the final cut. Please enjoy my glorious moment of unadulterated shock, embarrassment and pain. The Gun Range was Charlie's comeback. After being humiliated in the other events, he triumphantly rises to the occasion by shooting the hell out of his target a la "Gomer Pyle" in Full Metal Jacket. Albeit exhilarating, guns are not my thing. I'm a pacifist... and hopefully so is Charlie. The whole experience was a blast. I hope it makes you laugh. Getting to do some comedy in the midst of crime-solving was a great opportunity. I hope they let me do it again.

2. How I Met Your Mother: (Again, courtesy of TVGuide's Ausiello) Sarah Chalke is in advanced talks to reprise her role as Ted's possible future wife... In fact, just moments ago, Chalke's Mother crush himself, Josh Radnor — here to shoot a guest appearance for next week's Ausiello Report vodcast — confirmed that we'd probably be seeing Stella for a "few more episodes" this season. He was quick to add, however, that he has no clue whether or not she's the mother. "I really don't know," he said, "nor do I ask."

Some of you may have already read Neil Patrick Harris' comments re: the Britney episode yesterday but in case you missed it, here's an excerpt:

“I’m in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed,” Harris declared during a break from taping the Monday night CBS sitcom, which has grown a cult following since its 2005 debut. “I worry that if they start ‘Will and Grace’-ing us too much, that the show will suffer. And we’re all really proud of the content of the show. I mean, viewership is not our game. It’s the network and the studio’s game, you know. It’s the promotion department’s game,” the actor, who plays womanizer Barney, told The Associated Press in an interview last week... The show concluded with Spears’ secretary flirting with Barney. The following episode, which aired last Monday, introduced a “mystery woman” who’s been warning other women not to date the single-minded cad. Asked if Spears might turn out to be the secret slanderer, Bays said: “Could be. There’s no reason why not.” He also suggested the talented actress Sarah Chalke, who guest starred alongside Spears. Asked for his guess, Harris said: “No telling, but based on the stunt casting we’ve done in the past I’m guessing Tara Reid.”

I only watch HIMYM because I really like NPH and I think Barney makes the show. Now, I just love Neil that much more! He is absolutely right; I really hate it when shows I like start stunt casting. And the producers' assertions that it wasn't the beginning of a 'jump the shark' moment because "It was a great character and [they] think she played it well... [they're] glad that [they] didn’t sensationalize the character in any way" is stupid. Just because she played a character instead of herself doesn't mean it isn't retarded! Give me a break. The character was ridiculous and Britney's acting was worse. People only tuned in to see if she could string a coherent sentence together without wigging out! It wasn't because her character was so "great," believe me. The show can barely weave together an interesting story with the four leads they've got - they really don't need to add more peeps to the mix!

UPDATE (04/14): Aw, Neil got in trouble with the suits at the network (as we knew he would): Seeking to clarify some sound bites he gave an AP reporter on the set of HIMYM, NPH has issued a statement stressing that he is not opposed to Britney Spears reprising her guest-star role as Abby the receptionist. Positing that the AP scribe "took some quotes of mine and speculated an opinion about their intent," Harris tells Entertainment Weekly, "As I have said all along, Britney did a great job on the show. She really did. In fact, we are all hoping that she returns rather soon."As for the statements he made to the AP (as well as during a Harold & Kumar 2 junket), NPH says, "I am just very protective of our show and its content. I have a high standard of quality, and hope to maintain it on every level. I have great faith in our casting department... to find the appropriate person for every role on our show. I was remiss in speculating otherwise. My job description is to act, and I should really do just that."The AP at first held firm, saying that Harris "told us unequivocally that he did not believe that Britney should be on the show." Shortly thereafter, though, the news service said, "We're issuing a clarification…. Harris did not say that he opposed a return engagement for Spears, and our lede said that he did."

Desert Update

Yay!! Just heard from Biji and he's (currently) slated to return home from his tour this June!!! That is a lot sooner than I anticipated, so that's awesome news. He will stay a bit longer than the rest of his unit (of course) because he'll be in Kuwait helping "push out the Brigade’s equipment onto boats" but he should be home by late June or early July. Fantastic!! I am so happy he only has a few months left... he was originally slated for an 18-month tour so I'm very glad it's been downgraded to 15 months. That's certainly long enough in anyone's book!

This is a photo Biji sent along with his news:

Eighth grade Biji - is that you? Long time no see!

He actually sent this picture to me a while ago but since he sent it again, I figure that can only mean he wants me to share it with you. Blech!!!! (Sorry, Bij). This is certainly not his best look... Thank goodness he got sick of the lip warmer after about 10 days and it is now gone.
